Anyone who has ever suffered from lower back pain knows how very painful it may be. It is a very interesting fact that four out of each five Americans suffer from lower back pain, making it rather a problem for so numerous Americans. In this article I will give you a great deal of tips on figuring out why you have lower back pain and how to deal with the back pain if you are adverse to have it.

First, the lower back pain you have may be caused by a heap of things such as a former injury, slipped discs, strain from over activity, defective methods of lifting heavy objects, and even poor posture.

Second, before running off to the doctor for highpriced treatments and drugs you may want to undertake some of these methods to alleviate some of the pain. Cold is an magnificent treatment for pain. You may want to utilize an ice pack or bag to the area that hurts. The application of the cold to the effected area will reduce swelling and inflammation.

Third, heat is another magnificent means for reducing back issues. A hot bath or shower works well followed by the use of a heating pad or a hydroculator. When you put heat to the problem area it increments circulation by dilating the blood vessels in the4 area in pain.

Fourth, you may want to take over the counter pain pills, but if you do, make sure you follow the instructions conservatively and don’t take more than recommended.

Fifth, you may want to get started a sensible exercise program combining stretching and flexing. You will want to begin slow and then work your way up to a longer routine. You will be very astonished how a lot of people have been helped by exercise and have not found it necessary to visit the doctor.

Lastly, hopefully a heap of of the steps above may help with your pain, but if your pain gets more severe and these methods do not support in no way am I proposing that you will have to not remunerate a visit to your doctor. But it is well worth attempting a heap of of these simple tips first.

So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.

Chiropractors are known for their abilities in helping people with neck and back pain. The most mutual reason why an individual even considers seeing a chiropractor is for back pain, specifically low back pain. Research and studies and the frequent consensus is that we may help in this area. What in regards to shoulder pain? Is there anything a chiropractor may do to support shoulder pain?

You may surely have a chiropractor take a look at and evaluate your shoulder problem. While the spine is most ordinarily adjusted, the chiropractic adjustment may be performed at any joint. A joint is anyplace two bones meet. In the case of the shoulder, we’ll be looking at three dissimilar areas; the clavicle (collarbone), the humerus (upper arm), and the scapula (the shoulder blade).

Any of these joints may move out of their normal position with extended use in the faulty way. Stress and poor posture in the upper back may lead the shoulder blade to become stuck and fixated in the faulty position. The chiropractor may adjust this area and work with the muscles to get things moving again.

The same principles utilise to the humerus and the clavicle. There are sure movements in which each bone will take on a more necessary role. The chiropractor may feel with his hand if the right areas are moving or not. If the joint is not moving, this means it is likely not functioning correctly. This is where the chiropractor’s expertness may be of most use.

The introductory evaluation of the shoulder is genuinely to see if any of the muscles, ligaments, or tendons have torn. Depending on the severity of the tear, you may need an prompt referral for an MRI and a visit to an orthopedic specialist. You don’t want an individual moving your bones around if you have a tear, and the chiropractor doesn’t want to do that either.

If you haven’t had any trauma to the shoulder joint and the pain has just come on gradually over the years. The chiropractor may take a look and provide adjustments and work to the muscles that may make a world of difference.

Consistently putting my body under intense stress without breaks (I thought I was superman) resulted in severe muscle tension and lower back pain. I travel a lot for amateur competitions and I kept coming across people who would carry a mat with little spikes on it. This mat got me really interested, so when I asked about it I heard nothing but good things. Obviously I was skeptical but thought I had nothing to lose. When I researched acupuncture mats I came across Nayoya and thought I’d give it a try because of the low price.

Within a few days of use (2 times a day; after training & at night for 25 minutes each session), I’ve felt results that I doubted I would ever have. I actually started going to an acupuncturist recently, but after trying the Nayoya mat I decided to save my money and use it exclusively to test its benefits. My lower back pain has been decreasing every day! The way that this mat is allowing me to relax my body and reduce my muscle tension is quickly making it one of my favorite possessions. My back pain is reduced significantly and my attitude towards my training is way brighter than it has been in the past couple of years! I was so impressed that I decided to share my joy with you all and HIGHLY recommend anyone with migraines, back pain and even a poor mood to look into one! I’m sure there are other benefits that people may experience, this mat is great!

McWilliams
I have Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome and am in pain every waking hour, a lot of the time severe pain. My whole upper body is full of tender points and knots. I have pain throughout my whole body, but the bulk of it is in my neck, shoulders, back, and down both arms. I’ve been out of work for over a year and am getting ready to go back. Since I bought this, I have confidence it will help me enough to handle a reduced schedule. I also have a shoulder and neck massager and a back massager, but this seems to help the most. I lay it on the floor with a yoga mat under the top to get into my neck. I wear a very thin shirt or use it on bare skin. If it’s too much for you, just wear something thicker. When I lay on it, it’s like I experience euphoria. I roll around on it and bring my knees into my chest and rock back and forth on my back and the pain is drastically diminished or goes away. The pain does come back, but I do it several times a day and look forward to doing it. I’ve also had many more bearable days since I started using it, so it just may have some longterm healing properties. I just can’t stress enough how much this is helping me. If you have pain, you need to buy this. It could change your life, or at least, help you make it through the day and give you some relief. This is the best $30.00 I’ve ever spent!

I’ve also found that it helps untie the knots in my back. If there’s something in particular thats bothering you–say your lower back or neck then you can put a rolled up towel underneath the mat and under that area to intensify the healing process and removed knots from that particular area . The mat also seems to make the blood start circulating again and give a tingly sensation.
Everyone should get one. The hundreds of plastic spikes might look scary but they feel so good on your body, very tingly feeling and relaxing!
My mother who is 64 years old uses this every night also before going to bed because it helps her relax and puts her in a good stress free mood.
My wife uses the mat after her yoga sessions and sometimes falls asleep on it after meditation.

Memory foam was produced for NASA in the 1970′s. It became available to the public initial as a mattress topper and then in the 1990′s the full memory foam mattress was put on the market. Since then the memory foam mattress has become the most immediate growing product in the bedding industry. With more companies merchandising their version of the memory foam mattress buyers have become more and more confused regarding what they must be looking for when taking into account a memory foam mattress for themselves.

Density tells you how much the foam weighs, for instance a 5-pound density means that a one foot by one-foot cube of the mattress weighs 5 pounds. ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) determines the firmness of the mattress. ILD measures the amount of strength in pounds that is required to make a 1″ indentation from a 50″ disc into a 15″x15″x4″ piece of memory foam. For example, a 14 ILD rating means that it would take 14 pounds to make a 1″ indentation. Unlike traditionalisti foam mattresses that push back, memory foam has a lower resilience force, so it requires less pressure to make an indentation. The higher the ILD rating the firmer the mattress will be, and the lower the rating the softer it will be. If you wake up for the duration of the night with pain in your shoulders, hips or heels, then you are affected by pressure points. The pain is a result of too much strength being put on these parts of your body by a mattress that is pushing back too hard in focalized areas – normally your hips and shoulders.

When you lay down on a memory foam mattress, your body weight is evenly propagated over a wider area and brings about an impression in the memory foam. It gently conforms to each curve of your body. This feels like your body is being cradled in a cloud. Because the foam molds to you so well it allows you to sleep peacefully and wake up sentiment more rested. If you do suffer from pressure points in your shoulders, hips, knees or heels while sleeping then a memory foam mattress will let you wake up pain free as well. The foam conforms to your body as you sleep not similar to regular mattresses so pressure is not put on your pressure points while you sleep. Many with lower back difficulties have also found that they are competent to sleep pain free because the foam mattress cradles the form of the body and gives help where it is necessitated most.

Our capacity to function all around our day depends on the rest that we provide our bodies at night. With the outstanding invention of memory foam, we are now competent to have a restful nights sleep and wake up free from pain. Memory foam cradles your body without putting added pressure on hips, shoulders and heels. It lets you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud so you wake up fresh each morning. Because you will not be tossing and turning, even on those nights that you get to bed later then usual, you will wake up sentiment more rested then if you had slept on a conventional mattress.

891 of 899 people found the following review helpful.
Never Will I Go Back to Springs
By Chris
The background: My wife and I bought our first king size bed in April 2005. Three years later the thing was already sagging down the middle. Lived with it for a year and then finally made a warranty claim. The company stripped the bed down to the springs and rebuilt a new mattress. Lasted 8 months before terrible again.

So I read Consu. Reports and lo and behold, besides the fact that it states that mattresses are the number one inquired about review next to cars, they don’t actually rate any mattresses. I guess it is b/c the companies give each store their own model so it is impossible to compare. C.R. did, however, give satisfaction survey numbers on the different manufacturers. It was amazing. All but one were 50% or lower (the question, I believe, was would you buy another mattress of this brand). Most were much lower than 50% (Serta was 35%). I mean WOW. It is disheartening to think that the vast majority of people are unhappy with their beds. And yes, this includes those Sleep Number, outrageously priced people (I can buy an inflatable queen mattress at Wal-Mart for $15. Why does putting a case around it make it worth $3,000?)

Well, the ONE COMPANY that had higher than 50% was Tempur Pedic (around 60%, not great, but better than the rest). Problem is, even though I could afford it, there is no way I am paying $3,300 for a 12″ king size mattress. My first thought is, “China makes everything for 1/100th of the cost”, so I started Googling memory foam mattresses. Well to my pleasant surprise the good ole USA came through with Sleep Innovations.

I read all, and I mean all the reviews. I initially thought the Amazon Vine reviews (which are a lot) were bogus, purposely placed customer reviews. I have since learned (from a negative comment) that just means the company gave a bunch of free beds to get Amazon Vine reviews. But even discounting the Vines’ reviews, you could see that nearly all people were happy with it. I was still concerned though because I read horror stories from customer reviews on another off-brand memory mattress at Amazon. Stuff like the corners not ever flattening out and the company saying it could only be returned in the original box (which is absolutely impossible – the thing is vacuum sealed in there).

So I called the company. I am expecting terrible service and it was the complete opposite. Got someone right away, very nice, non-outsourced woman who said that the company had been in business for 12 years; yes I could return the mattress within the 20 year warranty and I would not have to use the same box (which when I asked that question, she stated flatly, “that would be impossible”).

The product: I took the dive and bought it. The real test is how it will feel in 5 years, but I can’t fast forward five years to tell you what’s what. And to that end, I figured I could get six of these for the price of a Tempur Pedic.) But I can say that two weeks into it and I love this bed. A couple bullet points:

1. No problem with the hotness issue you read about, but it is not summer. I figure worst case scenario, I will add an egg crate on top to have some separation from my body and the foam mattress if I have a heat issue. I should note that we had an 80 degree day recently and I had no heat issues that night.

UPDATE: Have had 99 degree weather days and no problems (of course we use the A/C (keep it on 78), but I thought I should add that).

2. Foam smell went away. Again, if it hadn’t, I would have bought an egg crate so my nose wasn’t right on it.

3. It is a firm mattress. You would never believe it if you sat on the side but when your whole body is stretched out, it is firm. It is a good firm though. I always thought I was a soft mattress guy, but after sleeping 4 years on a pillow top and a bad back to show it, I am making the switch. I figured if I needed it softer, I could buy an egg crate (see a pattern here?).

4. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE WHITE COTTON COVER. This is apparently the equivalent of the do not remove for penalty of jail tag. If you read the brochure that comes with the mattress it tells you that the warranty is void if you do that. So put some other cover over that if you must.

5. My wife has a memory foam pillow and it contours big time to your head and if you move your head, it is like you are squishing down Mount Everest again. This mattress is not like that. Very mild contouring which I think is a real plus.

6. As other reviews say, it is heavy as Hades. I got it upstairs with me pushing it up with my back and my wife getting it over each stair hump. I would NOT recommend this if you have a bad back, etc. Get a couple guys to do it.

Anyway it is late, I am tired, and I have a fantastic bed to go sleep in.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, we have had numerous 100+ degree weather days here in Georgia. Fortunately, however, I have not had any problems with feeling hot because of the bed.
UPDATE: Year later, no sagging, still very happy.

How the heck am I gonna….?

The box is heavy–over 70 pounds. But the mattress is folded in half, rolled, and compressed, so the box isn’t that unmanageable to haul up. Then you pry the mattress out of the box and let it flop open and un-compress. The instructions say to leave it open for 48 hours. This seems…unrealistic to me. I did it in the morning, and let it do its thing all day and slept on it that night. I’ll admit, there was a sort of chemical foam smell when you first open it, and a few hours later, but it’s gone entirely by the second night.

Sleep quality is nice. Mine is quite firm and supportive. Compared to the standard mattress (which it’s replacing) it’s a bit taller (so if you have mobility issues, you might have to adjust getting into and out of bed). I can see what they mean about limited motion transfer–before, when my beast of a cat would jump on the bed, oftentimes it would wake me up. Now, I don’t even feel him! Nice!

I know one reviewer complained about this mattress being sweltering? I am not trying to refute that, but that has not been my experience. I’m…of a certain age, where waking up with sweating is not that uncommon, and that has yet to happen to me. Which means it may yet happen as a hormonal thing, but I don’t think I can quite blame the mattress for it. (Sorry about the T.M.I., there!)

If you have two people to move this mattress, the troubles I’ve had will be a snap for you and you’ll be plenty comfy. I have a bad back and I’m already noticing a lot of improvement in my usual morning stiffness. Give it a try: I really love mine!

We researched this purchase extensively before deciding to purchase prior to the holidays. We previously had a Simmons Euro top ultra plush king that only lasted 5 years before it started to become uncomfortable and bother my back. We went to numerous stores to lay on Tempur pedic mattresses and other brands. We could not justify spending $3000 on a mattress that we might not like. It seemed like people either loved or hated these memory foam products.
We were a bit apprehensive about purchasing online but the reviews of this product were mostly positive. At a third of the price i figured we couldn’t go wrong. We did look at other companies but there were some concerns about the foam being used and where the products were being made. sleep innovations website was good and revlieved any fears on the foam etc.

We had free shipping but it did take close to 4 weeks to get the product which was a little surprising. It comes in a VERY small box that required two people to lift but it could easily be pushed. We opened it up on the foundation as diagramed in the instructions. It was quite cold but it still flattened out within about 2 hours. I have a sensitive nose and my wife even moreso and we noticed essentially NO smell which we were prepared for based on other reviews. We waited 2 days to sleep on it.

Here is where we found the difference between the Tempur Pedic product and the SI mattress. I found the mattress to be quite hard and honestly rather uncomfortable for the first 2 weeks. The “sink” in feeling of the TP beds just wasnt there. My wife was starting to get frusterated with it so we purchased a Down “topper” cover to go over it and PERFECT…. It is now much more comfortable and we are both sleeping better.

We are not big people but it seemed like we bottomed out the memory foam and were sleeping more on the hard foam product. In any event, now I feel like we have a good bed that is comfortable and will hopefully last at still a third of the price of a Tempur pedic…..But had to add the Topper to get the desired comfort we wanted…

A neck aid pillow provides pressure relief and help to the most critical area – your neck. The ergonomic design enables all body types and sizes to take vantage of the natural ease that comes from it is use.

The design allows your neck and shoulder muscles to relax completely. Its ergonomic shape and distinctive pressure relieving intent enables humans with neck and back uneasiness to get a good night’s sleep. It is important to note that sleep pillows have been clinically shown to improve the quality of your sleep.

Let’s talk in regards to home use, travel use and direct gains of the aid pillow.

Home use

There are a great deal of home pillow designs to suit your body and personal preferences. Goals vary from person to person on what they seek to get out of their neck support. However, the top three reasons humans state are:

1.	lumbar support

2.	leg support

3.	head support

No matter what your goal is the aid pillow gives pressure relieving and that is what you are looking for.

Travel use

Let’s face it, traveling may make you tired. When we get tired of sitting in a bus or airplane seat we commence to contort our bodies from one position to another. Then after we arrive at our destination and sleep in an unfamiliar bed we proceed the vicious cycle of tossing and turning. We might even wake up with a crook in our neck.

To combat this potential problem it might be beneficial to get yourself a good horseshoe or u-shaped travel support pillow. This peculiar design cradles your neck, so that it relieves pressure and promotes ease and support while traveling.

Benefits

No matter how some times you switch positions for the duration of the night, the neck aid pillow enables you to wake up rested, relaxed and ready to take on the day. Ok, you might not feel like Superman, but notwithstanding you will feel rested.

A sagging or distorted pillow promotes an unnatural spine alignment. Your muscles, in the lower neck and back area, tense up attempting to restore a more natural positioning of the spine. It is this muscle tension that builds up all around the night, fabricating the morning uneasiness and pain. When you use a support pillow you naturally redistribute body weight, primarily bettering your circulation.

When you use sleep pillows you wake up refreshed and you no longer have to worry with regards to chronic pain and stiffness. Instead the sleep pillow gives your neck, back and shoulders ease and support.

So no matter what brand of support pillow you choose, just give it a try. A higher quality of sleep helps you look and feel better. Your energy will be restored. You will even look better because sleep rejuvenates the skin and lessens wrinkles.

It was supportive without being a rock, yet firm enough so that my head didn’t feel like my neck was the sole support. My mom had another massaging pillow that was as hard as a rock. She “borrowed” my Ortho Therapy pillow and never gave it back for the flight duration (though she did make sure that I carried it off the plane, not her.) It’s a pretty comfortable pillow and it’ll be going on another flight with me in the future.

It is exactly what I needed since I have constant neck pain. The material is super soft and not the cheap material I would expect from such a low price. If you have neck pain, this is definately the pillow you want. Most side sleepers will benefit from this because side sleepers tend to have problems with neck pain. I use this during the day sitting in my office chair, so when I lean back it is a comfortable fit. Sometimes I use it when I sleep at night and wake up without neck pain. I like that it is not too soft because it would not give me the support I need if it was. It is not hard, only firm, but after a few weeks it will soften up a little. The material is elegant and high-quality. I would definately pay more money for this pillow, so it is a great value at under $15.00.

Lumbar sprains and muscle strains of the lower back are mutual causes of back pain. When the muscle fibers are abnormally stretched or torn in the lower back, the result is a strained low back muscle, called a lumbar strain. When the tough bands of tissue, the ligaments, that hold bones together, are stretched or torn from their attachments, the painful result is a lumbar sprain. Both injuries have similar sensations or changes so the two types of injuries are many times grouped together by physicians under the term, musculoligamentous injuries of the lumbar spine.

The ligaments in your back, which may be injured, are similar to those in your ankle, which may be damaged by a sprain. Surprisingly, in spite of the uncomfortableness from a sprained back, humans are much more likely to proceed walking around than they are with a sprained ankle. This is principally due to the difficultness came across in attempting to support injured back ligaments with a firm binding as may be done with an ankle. This is indispensable as the peril of harm to the ligament is much dandier in the back than in any other part of the body.

Causes Of Lumbar Sprains And Strains

Improper lifting or bending

Work situations are ofttimes responsible when poor proficiencies in lifting, bending, twisting actions are used. Serious back conditions may be the result.

Sports injury

Backs are exceptionally subject to strain with any kind of racquet sports or activenesses that require exaggerated motion of the spine.

Poor muscle conditioning

Toned muscles that are in good condition are more inviolable and less prone to injury. Strong body core muscles aid prevent back injury and support the spine.

Obesity

Every extra pound that is carried around adds to the strain placed on the back. Abdominal weight may cause a sway back posture, making the body unbalanced and the back more prone to injury.

Poor Posture

Standing slumped over or slouched causes the entire weight of the body to pull versus the ligaments of the pelvis and lower back.. Years of this may cause these ligaments to become stretched and weakened so they may not in the right manner control the joints. Years of poor posture may lead to back uneasiness from the simple act of attempting to stand erect!

Standing Incorrectly

When forced to stand for long periods of time, most humans unconsciously shift their weight to one side and commonly favor standing on a sure side. This simple act causes spinal distortion and postural misalignment which may in the long run result in a serious, sudden, back injury.

Smoking

Experts have proven that nicotine blocks the distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the cells, including those of the muscles. Waste merchandise build up in muscle tissue and a fatigued muscle, depleted of oxygen, is much more prone to injury.

Most back injuries are due to injuries of the muscles or ligaments and are the second most mutual cause of missed work days, only following the mutual cold. Most will heal within a month or so but any persistent back pain ought to be evaluated by a physician.

ReviewHealing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It will have to have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one peculiar cause of back pain–Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)–and isn’t genuinely a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and galore more pages telling why established methods don’t work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs–and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind’s crusade to repress emotions. He’s not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he’s saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in (“and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the routine is not enough”), the trick doesn’t work any more, and there’s no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain must not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) –Joan Price

From Library JournalThis best marketer was firstborn published in 1991, but no one ever bid for the audio rights. Now, Sarno will narrate his own work.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review”My life before Dr. Sarno was filled with excruciating back and shoulder pain. For twenty years I likewise suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and thought my back pain was due to my height or a good deal of sort of spine problem and that my OCD was a chemical imbalance and only treatable with medication. But all my thoughts were wrong. Imagine the miracle in my life when in a matter of weeks my back pain disappeared. Imagine my shock when I used Dr. Sarno’s principles and never suffered a single symptom again. Quite merely – I owe Dr. Sarno a lot.” – Howard Stern

“For fifteen years, my life revolved around my back. I took time off from work, conducted meetings lying on the floor and slept with ice bags. Could this be psychogenic? I had considered Dr. Sarno’s ideas preposterous, but ten years ago I was talked into seeing him. I haven’t had back difficulties since. If Dr. Sarno is right a when it comes to other psychogenic pain, America is wasting billions of dollars. What a tragedy.” – John Stossel, correspondent, 20/20

“John Sanro has changed my life and the lives of all the humans to whom I have commended him. He was healing people who are in need of medical care with the mind-body connection long before any person else I know. He is a unfeigned miracle worker.” – Ann Bancroft

Most back pain lasts only a short time, and if it persists, you probably either have a really serious medical problem (that is usually obvious) or there are psychological factors involved.

If you’ve been through the conventional medical system with your back pain for a long time with no satisfaction, have had many physical treatments (such as heat, massage, manipulation, etc.) with no relief, AND have had serious back pain issues ruled out, then I say it would be well worth your while to at least check out this book. While there are true physical causes of back pain that are not psychological, this book will make you think about any stress related issues that could be a part of your pain. Other self-help books I liked include Treat Your Own Spinal Stenosis. Good luck!

I NEVER take it for granted. I biked 35 miles just today without so much as a twinge. I had suffered with back pain for ten years after being attacked by a combative patient at work (I was a psych nurse) so it was pretty much a miracle to stumble on Dr. Sarno’s book and his theories. I’m an incredibly practical person who tends to pooh-pooh a lot of holistic medicine, but these theories are based on common sense. If I ever feel even a twinge of discomfort, usually re-reading the Prologue is enough to make me better. Thank you, Dr. Sarno, for changing my life!

Ellis
If you’re like me and thousands (millions?) of others who suffer from back pain and other ailments (e.g., sciatica, “tennis elbow”, even frequent urination and skin rashes), this book is a literal lifesaver.

I first learned about Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), the name Dr. Sarno gave to this condition, in 1999 when Dr. Sarno appeared on Larry King Live. At that time, I had been suffering from chronic low back pain for a decade. I first developed it my junior year in college and had back pain off and on since. Because I was a military officer at the time when it was most severe, I was afforded exceptional healthcare and offered every possible treatment at the U.S. government’s expense. However, no amount of treatment – physical therapy, chiropractic care, exercising/stretching, acupuncture, etc. – could free me of my debilitating pain. That is, until I discovered Dr. Sarno’s diagnosis.

By the time I read Dr. Sarno’s book, I had every known type of imagery done to determine the root of my low back pain – MRI, CT, X-ray, etc. Still, nothing was conclusive, so once I learned through Dr. Sarno’s book the pain could simply be a phyiscal reaction to emotional pain, the diagnosis made perfect sense to me and was easy to believe. Within days of reading the book, I was cured. Amazing.

Unfortunately, I still have bouts with TMS, sometimes severe bouts. As such, I continue to seek out a permanent cure for my problem. Dr. Sarno’s book helped me put the pain in perspective and regain control of my life. However, it has not been able to rid me of TMS all together. He suggests psychotherapy if TMS persists, but I live in South Korea and do not have that as an option. Nonetheless, I am at least relieved to know I haven’t caused any real injury to my back. I can thus go about my business and simply manage the pain as it arrives. Thank you, Dr. Sarno, thank you.

Incidentally, before I close, I should mention many people rave about Fred Amir’s book “Rapid Recovery from Back Pain”. I too have that book, but I have not found it that helpful (see my review). Regardless, whatever answers you seek beyond this book, don’t do so until you’ve started here. Dr. Sarno’s book is the foundation for any further help you may seek.

REVIEW UPDATE: 15 JANUARY 2004

I am writing to reaffirm how wonderful this book truly is. I am very happy to report I have had literally no back pain in nearly two years now. None. My treatment? Nothing other than reading Dr. Sarno’s book. That’s it. Please, folks, do yourself a favor. Give this book a try. I exaggerate not when I say that reading this paperback alone can free you of pain forever. I’m living proof.

You are talking about your headaches or your low back pain, or numerous mutual malady with a friend and they respond by saying you will have to see my chiropractor for that. At this point, you dreadfully reply but once I go to the chiropractor won’t I need to go forever?

I here this from persons who requires medical care each day in my office. Let me try and clear up this point. First, there is no addiction to getting adjusted. Once you have it done you are not all of a sudden going to have the subconscious need to go have another adjustment. However, once persons who requires medical care realize how much better they feel, how much more motion they have in their joints and how they are better competent to withstand the stresses of each and everyday life after they have received a few adjustments they many times determine they want to carry on to always feel this good.

Chiropractic works by finding and correcting misaligned vertebra or bones of the spine that cause pain and poor range of motion, poor functioning of surrounding muscles and now and then the misalignments even disrupt organ function. Adjusting the spine helps to restore more normal motion and position to the joint and persons who requires medical care often feel an prompt increase range of motion and sense of relief after being adjusted. Removal of nerve interference allows the muscles and organs that receive those nerve messages to work better, hence adjustments bestow to bettered overall health and wellness.

Second, chiropractors don’t hold a gun to your head and say you better get adjusted. I am being a bit sarcastic, but in truth you are in charge of your health. If you don’t grasp why a doctor is telling you to have treatment or what that treatment is supposed to do than it is your obligation to ask. I think that perchance a good deal of chiropractors fail to explain why a patient may carry on to need treatment and what the goal to be attained is of that treatment.

For example, in my office if you plainly want pain relief we explain that you will in all likelihood experience that within the firstborn 5-10 adjustments. We likewise explain that for most people their problem will not be corrected or stabilized in that amount of time of time and will return if they stop care. If they choose to do that it is their decision and they understand the risks. If a patient is following a longer term corrective care program we explain that our goal is to keep the spine in the most normal position with normal or optimal motion for as a lot of hours of the day as possible so that the ligaments and other surrounding soft tissues heal in this position. This is the reason that adjustments are repeated initially at very close intervals to undertake to achieve optimal healing. When persons who requires medical care understand this then it makes sense for them to get adjusted 2 or 3 times a week for a amount of time of time.

Finally, as I noted earlier, chiropractic helps to improve overall health. There are studies that demonstrate bettered immune function, intensified reaction time, better energy and more restful sleep following chiropractic care. Once persons who requires medical care experience a lot of of these benefits, and they recognize that chiropractor’s may observe minor difficulties in the spine before they cause any pain or symptoms, galore choose to proceed wellness or maintenance care. These periodic checkups ofttimes occur one or two times per month depending on the individual, their health, modus vivendi and firstborn problem. However, it is always up to the patient whether they want to carry on with any form of care. It is your choice, ordinarily based on the amount of education and understanding you have of the treatment and condition. After all, brushing and flossing the teeth, visiting the dentist one or two times a year, eating healthful feed and exercise are all selections that we make based on our understanding and our health goals. Choosing to see the chiropractor is genuinely no different.

How long you want to receive chiropractic care is up to you. Once persons who requires medical care comprehend how necessary good spinal alignment is to overall health because of the affect it has on the nervous system, most of them choose to have themselves and their children checked steadily to support maintain optimal health. Whatever you determine make sure your chiropractor is your collaborator and health coach to aid you achieve your goals.

Lower  back  pain  is  a  disconcerting  sensation  due  to  galore  disrupted  blood  flow  in  the  muscle  tissue.  This  is  also  due  to  severe  pressure  on  the  blood  vessel  caused  by  too  much  release  of  blood.  The  condition  is  triggered  by  a  lot  of  factors.  Some  of  these  elements  are  the  following;

- Remaining seated for a long time will lead to this discomfort.

- A strong blow to the pelvic area.

- Strain from a repetitious activity.

- Severe hemorrhage caused by miscarriage.

- Symptom of a painful menstrual period.

All of the components cited have something to do with either the severe strain being put on the back or exuberant release of blood. But there are still numerous other causes of back pain. Too much exercise may also lead to this condition. Dislocated bone in the pelvic area is another factor to consider. The same goes for a broken bone due to a fall on the stairs. Inflammation of the muscle area is still another caused to feel pain in the lower back.

A shock or trauma inflicted by a strong strength is another instigator of back pain. This shock could be acquired by being hit with a moving vehicle. Lower back pain may be temporary, mild or severe. Mild or temporary pain may be cured by taking in pain killers. While a severe pain necessitates that you consult a doctor immediately. Avoid abusing your body peculiarly the lower back area because this may lead to getting lame or being invalid.

Lower Back Pain Possible Causes

According to established wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable percentage of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do manufacture osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of good sense advice, dietary info, aimed exercise, and tips on utile supplements. According to the author, sufferers may often wholly keep away from the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery — approaches that, when necessary, may be applied as an prospect to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease’s progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that may be done at home, at a gym, or underneath a trainer’s or physical therapist’s supervision. Nutritional and supplement systems — including glucosamine and fish oil — are staged in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.

O’Steen
This book is inaccurately titled. Stedman’s Medical Dictionary states arthritis is: “inflammation of a joint or a state characterized by inflammation of joints,” but this book does not cover the majority of the over 120 types of arthritis that exist. This book only covers osteoarthritis, which the author states is the most common. If you have osteoarthritis and have not kept up to date with current complementary medicine then this is a good book for you. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip, then it is excellent. The best part of this book is the author’s clear explanations of how you can alter the course of this debilitating disease. There is some repetition of exercises due to the way the author chose to organize his material, providing recommendations for those with disease of the knee and hip. This book would benefit those formally diagnosed with osteoarthritis and those who have known injuries to joints that are likely to predispose them to developing osteoarthritis.

A slim volume, it is a cornucopia of information and I intend to keep it at hand.

Dr. Grant Cooper has written a concise, clearly understandable guidebook for managing arthritis to achieve the best quality of life. I realized while reading that when I was running fifty miles a week I was doing everything he suggests. The onset of fibromyalgia set me back tremendously but there is no reason I, and anyone who has arthritis, cannot slowly introduce the changes Dr. Cooper enumerates. The brilliance of this book is that, while making arthritis more tolerable, it also will improve your overall health.

The book is divided into five sections. The first is a brief explanation of the workings of your joints and how arthritis develops. The second through fifth are the remedial portions. Dr. Cooper addresses nutrition and his recommendations are in line with those for good health in general. Arthritis sufferers need antioxidants even more than others and there is a list of the most antioxidant-rich foods. Essentially you need to add a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. You also need to add more cold water fish as the omega 3 fatty acids are important. You should limit your red meat consumption. All these and the others mentioned are common sense not just for our health but also for the health of the planet. If, as Dr. Cooper suggests, you begin to adjust your eating habits slowly you CAN reach your goal of a healthier diet.

Part III deals with exercise. Counterintuitively it is important to move the affected joints. Dr. Cooper presents stretching and weight bearing exercises with clear explanations and excellent photographs. As with the dietary changes, slowly incorporating exercise into your daily routine can have great benefit and not just for those who suffer from arthritis.

Part IV covers supplements that may help some arthritis sufferers. Not everyone should take supplements and, as throughout the book, there are caveats and recommendations to discuss any changes you contemplate with your doctor.

Part V broaches the topic of surgery. Hopefully this will be a last resort and Dr. Cooper discusses the various degrees of surgery available to those who find it necessary.

I learned quite a lot from this small book and I have been keeping myself informed as best I can about my various forms of arthritis. I believe I can make some of these changes quite easily since I used to live this way. They are all accessible to anyone, however, and when the book comes out you will want to read it if you suffer from arthritis no matter how debilitating.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent guide for Managing Arthritis
By Mack Lundy
The Arthritis Handbook is a book that I wish had been available 40 years ago and that I would have been smart enough to follow. Other than folk medicine books, I don’t recall much in the way of medical advice for the general public back then. I assumed I would have to follow that path of my elders, that arthritis was a part of aging, and there would be a cane in my future.

Dr. Grant Cooper has written a very accessible book about osteoarthritis, one that has relevance for all age groups. For the young, it provides a plan to minimize one of the probable effects of aging. For seniors, it is a guide to ameliorating the effects of arthritis. One of Cooper’s goals is to help the reader make lifestyle changes and the book is written and organized to give the reader the information to make those changes.

In Part I, Dr. Cooper describes how joints work and how arthritis begins. Some readers might be tempted to skip this part and go directly to the chapters that give action plans for the reader to follow. That would be a mistake. That would be a mistake. Knowing how the joints work and how arthritis sets in provides a foundation for the subsequent chapters particularly those describing exercise.

Nutrition is covered in Part II. The advice is not faddish and clearly presented. It might be the most difficult aspect of ones life to modify but the author makes a compelling case and relates the effects of diet to the information on joints and arthritis provided in Part I. Dr. Cooper describes why and how he modified his own eating habits which contributes to the effectiveness of the message that proper nutrition plays a major part in preventing the onset of arthritis and easing the effects of an existing condition.

I had already begun an exercise program as described in Part III before reading this book. Dr. Cooper recommends working with a trainer and I endorse that recommendation. I was going to the gym on my own before I engaged a trainer and was astonished at the ineffectiveness of my approach. It is difficult to effectively exercise based on text and photographs in a book. A trainer will make sure that you are performing the exercises and stretches properly to avoid injury and also make sure that you are exercising and stretching the right areas of the body.

Part IV covers supplements. As with nutrition, Dr. Cooper takes a practical, conservative, and balanced, approach that doesn’t stray into exotic, supplement remedies popular in infomercials. He is careful to indicate where the benefits of certain supplements have not been conclusively proven but where there is sufficient reason to believe that they will have some effect. I found his discussions on fish oil and glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate particularly interesting as I was taking those supplements before reading the book. For example, while my fish oil supplement is advertised as containing 1,200 mg of fish oil, it is well short of the recommended amount of EPA/DHA.

The subtitle of the book is The Essential Guide to a Pain-Free, Drug Free Life but he necessarily concludes with a section on medication and surgery. He emphasizes that these options need to be done in conjunction with diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements. An analgesic will mask the pain but do nothing to correct the underlying disease causing the pain.

Dr. Cooper’s book is a excellent, readable resource for to establish both a preventative as well as a management program for dealing with arthritis.

Back Pain An Alternative Treatment With Chiropractic

Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of closely 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points fabricate pain allround the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, devising uncomfortableness ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increments circulation and oxygenation in the area and often times develops instant relief.

This dynamic technique has made a big affect amidst health pros and the public alike, getting an for the length of one night classic in the field of pain relief.
ReviewThe primary edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in it is field, and was the firstborn book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a assortment of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitious strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are affiliated to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been applied for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to speedily stimulate the flow of oxygen and advertize rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same proficiencies available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations.
The author’s interest in trigger point therapy started out when he used it to with great success treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has consecrated himself to instructing others the same techniques. That commitment is apparent all around his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is modified selective information that must be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as utile instruction in a assortment of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an magnificent self-care resource for anybody mesmerized in pain relief.–Larry Trivieri Jr.

What could I do about it? Simply massage them away – within half an hour of hitting the correct locations my right thumb (and hand and arm) seemed to heal by about 60%! The rest of the healing took maybe 3 more weeks of finding these things and methodically deactivating them.

Other muscles besides the scalene were involved and Clair Davies had them all referenced in the back of the book under “thumb”. This is the case for any body part you may need help with, it is all very accessible and easy to find. Needless to say, this book was a miracle in my life – providing a simple solution to a debilitating problem that seemingly did not HAVE any solution (no doctor, acupuncturist, or even most up-to-date-book on repetitive strain injuries seemed to hit upon this stunning information). I went from abject misery to basically playing this strange video game of hunting out and zapping away all these trigger points hidden in my muscles.

I found this book fairly late in the healing process, and so it’s important to note that another book, IT’S NOT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME! helped me immensely with all of the problems I had that did NOT include trigger points – I would even say that my left side (arm, hand) had healed already by studying what I found in that book alone. But the trigger points were the missing piece.

I want to thank the reviewer who suggested getting the book spiral-bound at kinko’s so it will lie flat and xeroxing the cover so you can pass it out to everyone you know without lending it (I gave my first copy away but discovered I need the book on an ongoing basis).

I discovered that the book actually has its own website, which you can find by searching ‘trigger points’ on google. I suggest reading ALL about the book there yourself, and if you think it might help you ordering from amazon because it is cheaper. Even once you have the book, the website makes the info. very accessible.

At a certain point, I started to dot the hard-to-find trigger points on my skin with a marker. It may look bizarre but they can be hard to keep track of and you want to get all of them.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE SECTION ON PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION, even if massaging trigger points seems to be enough to cure you.

The scalene trigger points can be HARD to find. At first I found them easily, but months later my symptoms came back and after 2 weeks of despair I found a terrible trigger point that was almost completely hidden in the scalene, I could only reach it after hitting the muscle at a particular angle.

Underline as you go along! Here and there he mentions areas of referred pain that are NOT depicted in the illustration.

Very relevant pages I xeroxed and taped to the wall.

Again, SOME aspects of Repetitive Strain Injury are not brought about by trigger points, so everyone w/computer related injuries needs to look at IT’S NOT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME! by Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis and also the books by Emil Pascarelli. If you have REAL nerve damage, trigger point therapy may ease some of your discomfort but it won’t resolve the problem.

Those with back problems might want to look into John Sarno’s MINDBODY PRESCRIPTION. Maybe even those w/out back problems – however this recommendation is based on other people’s experiences not my own.

Other books I used: Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (by Sharon Butler & also her online book about DeQuervain’s of the thumb), Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, Tendon & Ligament Healing, Free Your Breath Free Your Life…and the PBS program Priscilla’s Yoga Stretches (not a book, it is apparently shown in many parts of the US). Some of these I got from the library, but being that my HANDS were at stake I would have just put them all on a credit card if I had had no other choice. I also recommend spending time between the shelves of Barnes & Noble.

If you happen to live in Los Angeles, Janet Travell & David Simon’s medical volumes, upon which Clair Davies’ work is based, are available at the Central Library (one reference set, and one that you can actually check out). Don’t know about other major cities – but they’re beautiful, exquisite books and amazingly clear.

Finally, I am just now looking into Bonnie Prudden’s books particularly ‘MYOTHERAPY’ from 1984- and I am surprised because while they are missing key components of The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook they offer insights about trigger points that I have not found in other places. She quotes Janet Travell often, and there is great spirit in her book.

There is no way to express my gratitude to Clair Davies, et al, for making this info. available to the world. I am literally better off knowing about trigger points than I would be had I won a million dollars.

It’s a crime that this info has been around for over a quarter of a century & the medical world has not yet grabbed a hold of it.

Good luck everyone!

January 8th, 2006 update: After all that I now have something more to add: I did actually have more trouble getting over a recent relapse than I would have expected, and I have been greatly helped by a massage therapist who is actually very familiar with trigger point therapy. In addition to trigger points, he has been helping me with other forms of massage therapy & guidance on how to rehabilitate my muscles without overdoing it. After being so injured for a long time it is great to have professional guidance in conjunction with self-applied trigger point therapy. He knew about this book & appreciated how well-informed I was – unlike certain doctors I have spoken with who seemed to take offense at my attempt to do my own research! In summary: use this book and if necessary, try to find a great massage therapist as well.

one more thing: the book is almost entirely viewable in google books! also, it has its own website triggerpointbook dot com.

This book SAVED ME by helping put an end to about 4 months of “unexplained” pain in my thighs, knees, buttocks and hips. I had spent hundreds of $$ getting x-rays, MRI’s, bone scans, and seeing numerous physicians as well as a physical therapist, chiropractor, and a naturopath. None had a clear expanation of what was causing me so much pain for such a long time. I was prescribed massive doses of ibuprofen (which did nothing but ruin my stomach) as well as Valium, Flexeril, Elavil, and finally Prozac. I tried various supplements including potassium, magnesium and B vitamins, but they didn’t seem to do anything. I was completely unable to exercise as it made the pain much worse..at times I was unable to walk a couple blocks. I finally got this book last week and realized that little “knots” in my muscles were the source of all this grief. No wonder nothing else (physical therapy, diet, medication) worked! With the book I figured out that I had at about ~10 trigger points in my buttocks/thighs, some which were EXTREMELY painful to massage. Since it was so painful i was a bit skeptical at first but I stuck with it. I began to massage with a tennis ball several times a day. Some trigger points responded immedately after a massage and others took several days, but after a while the aching pains in my legs have subsided! I couldn’t believe that something so SIMPLE (something I could do myself) could end such a debilitating problem that numerous doctors & specialists couldn’t figure out. Combined with acupuncture and craniosacral therapy & occasional professional deep-tissue massage I would say my pain is 99% gone. I am so glad I discovered this book…I never thought I would find the explanation (and the solution!) for all this pain!! I can now look forward to returning to a normal, pain-free life! Thanks so much to Clair Davies and others who contributed to making this book!!

P.S. I have just started reading through ALL the sections of this book (not just the ones for leg pain) since trigger point massage seems to help with all sorts of pain (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, etc). So from now on I will consult this book FIRST before seeking a doctor or some medication for any type of pain. My only regret is that I didn’t buy this book sooner!!

I had shoulder pain for over two months, that neither rest, heat, cooling, meds, or excercise diminished in the slightest. My doctor could find no cause for it, and recommended physical therapy. That didn’t help. Out of frustration, I picked up a stack of books at the library. Fortunately, this was the first one I looked at. I was skeptical frankly, but being desparate devoted a couple of hours to reading the salient parts of the book. I found my trigger point ( tender area ) on the front shoulder ( anterior deltoid as I recall ).

I purchased a lacrosse ball as recommened in the book, and proceeded to massage the area using the technique specified. The end result was in two days, the pain thruout my shoulder had diminished by approx. 80%. After 1 week, the pain was gone, with only an occasional sensation. It’s been about 2 weeks now since I started, and I still have a very tiny tender area, so I give it the ball treatment a couple of times a day.

It’s very important to complete the treatment until the trigger point is TOTALY erased ( as stated in the book ). Also, some have mentioned that the book is highly technical. It is to a degree, but not to where it can’t be discerned by the average person with a little perseverance. You don’t have to read the entire book! Just the initial couple of chapters on diagnosis and technique, then straight to the chapter that deals with your symptom area. Like I said, I spent a couple of hours reading, and went right at the treatment.

I had to write this, as I could not find the authors email anywhere, and I’m eternally grateful to him for giving the world this treatment technique that a layman can self adminster. If your a pain sufferer you owe it to yourself to at least try this system.

The word “ergonomic” originated from the Greek words “ergos” meaning work, and “nomos,” meaning natural laws of. In essence ergonomics is the study of how we may manipulate our work surroundings to better suit our bodies while we work. Humans were not designed to sit for 8 plus hours a day! Knowing this ergonomists have expended decades studying how to better help the body for the duration of this unnatural procedure of seated task work.

There are a heap of distinct elements involved in creating a functional, ergonomic work environment. There are so a good deal of we cannot cover all of them in one article so we’ll focus on the the most indispensable piece of ergonomic furniture in your office. YOUR CHAIR. There is only one piece of ergonomic furniture you will always be in contact with and that is your ergonomic chair. Whenever your sitting at your desk your body is in neverending contact with whatsoever form of office seating you’ve chosen to use. It’s necessary that the seat and back surfaces are constructed with materials that reduce pressure points and follows the contours of the body. “Continuous Support” is the foundation of each ergonomic office chair.

For years makers concentered on using multiple layers of foam with dissimilar densities. In 1994 Herman Miller introduced the Aeron Chair using mesh for both the seat and the back. The use of mesh was talent and sparked a revolution in the design and manufacture of office seating. The introduction of mesh to the seat and back yields perfection in neverending support. The mesh follows each curve of the body and cradles the user. The lumbar area of the back is of queer vantage because each users body is of dissimilar proportions. The mesh gives in the scapular areas and remains tight in the lumbar region which improves posture immensely. This may be achieved with a foam chair but the chair would not be perfective for each user. A chair with mesh on the seat or back may be applied by a wider range of body types and may provide neverending help to all of them!

Ergonomic mesh chairs are not only look cool but as you may see they have functional intent as well. A mesh office chairs capacity to provide ergonomically rectify support to the users is unsurpassed by any other material. There are now a great deal of manufacturers supplying chairs with mesh applied to upholster the seating surfaces. Chairs with mesh seats are in general more pricey because they’re more complex and pricey to manufacture. Many office chairs have mesh backs only and a traditionalisti foam seat. This makes for a more lowpriced ergonomic mesh chair. Either option is in general better than a conventional office chair with foam cushions because of the properties of mesh upholstery.

After years of suffering with chronic neck and back pain caused by sitting in various office chairs, I discovered the Ergo Chair. I sit up straighter and can actually feel the benefits. I have tried other ergonomic chairs, but they didn’t feel anything like this. I also like the fact that the “footprint” of the chair is small enough to fit my desk and that it looks very professional. I am going to buy 2 more for my family.
